WAFCON 2024: Super Falcons Soar Into Semifinals with Dominant 2-0 Win Over Zambia
July 18, 2025: Nigeria’s Super Falcons have advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 after a commanding 2-0 victory over Zambia’s Copper Queens in Casablanca.
The highly anticipated quarterfinal clash lived up to expectations with Nigeria asserting early dominance, scoring from their first free kick just minutes after kickoff. Veteran defender Osinachi Ohale opened the scoring, giving the Falcons a dream start at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium.
Zambia, led by star forwards Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, tried to find their rhythm but struggled to break down Nigeria’s disciplined defense and midfield.
Before the half-hour mark, Nigeria doubled their lead. Esther Okoronkwo controlled a lofted pass with her chest and slotted home the Falcons’ second of the evening, putting the nine-time champions in firm control of the match.
Despite Zambia’s attacking talent, the Copper Queens could not find a breakthrough, with Nigeria’s defense — anchored by Ashleigh Plumptre, Michelle Alozie, and Oluwatosin Demehin — remaining compact and composed.
The Super Falcons will now prepare for a tough semifinal matchup as they continue their quest for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title. With the win, they also move one step closer to securing a spot at the 2025 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
Coach Justin Madugu will be pleased with his team’s clinical finishing, defensive discipline, and growing momentum in the tournament.
