May 23, 2025: Indian men’s cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir shared insights on the future leadership of India’s Test side. With the upcoming challenging tour of England and the next two years of the ICC Test Championship in focus, Gambhir stressed the need for a captain who can provide consistent leadership over an extended period.

Speaking with Anand Narasimhan, Gambhir acknowledged the absence of key players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the upcoming series but viewed it as an opportunity for younger talents to step up. “This is the right time for youngsters to show their mettle,” Gambhir said, highlighting the importance of fresh leadership on the horizon.

Gambhir made it clear that the captaincy decision would be a collaborative effort involving the BCCI, selectors, and the team’s think tank. While no official name has been announced, Gambhir indicated that the priority would be continuity and consistency, especially with the ICC Test Championship cycle starting after the June final between Australia and South Africa.

Though Jasprit Bumrah’s name was mentioned, Gambhir suggested a younger player like Shubman Gill could be a promising long-term captaincy option due to his leadership qualities and potential. However, he ruled out the possibility of having a single captain across all formats, citing the intense physical and mental demands placed on modern cricketers who compete in Tests, ODIs, T20s, and the IPL.
“Different formats may require different captains,” Gambhir said, reinforcing that the approach would be flexible and tailored to players’ capacities.
Gambhir also emphasised the importance of open communication and strategic alignment within the team. He assured full support to whoever takes on the captaincy role, recognising that the ultimate responsibility for team decisions and on-field outcomes lies with the skipper.
The coach reiterated that the team’s primary objective remains winning, and stressed that the chosen captain should be a dependable leader available for at least two formats, ensuring stability barring unforeseen circumstances.
As the team prepares for a pivotal series in England, all eyes will be on the emerging leaders ready to guide Team India through a crucial phase in international cricket.
