Why India, England Players Wear Black Band On 3rd Day At Headingley?
June 22, 2025: Players from India and England wore black armbands on Sunday during Day 3 of their ongoing Test match to honour the memory of former England fast bowler David ‘Syd’ Lawrence, who passed away at the age of 61.
The tribute began with a moment of applause before the start of play, acknowledging the impact and legacy of Lawrence, a trailblazer and respected figure in English cricket. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the gesture in an official statement:
“Both teams are wearing black armbands to pay their respects to former England cricketer, David ‘Syd’ Lawrence, who has sadly passed away.”
Lawrence, known for his powerful pace and larger-than-life presence, played five Tests and one ODI for England between 1988 and 1992, claiming 18 Test wickets and 4 ODI wickets. He remains a historic figure as the first British-born Black cricketer to represent England at the highest level.
His promising international career came to an abrupt halt in 1992 when he suffered a catastrophic kneecap injury while bowling against New Zealand in Wellington.
In 2024, Lawrence was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), a progressive neurological condition for which there is currently no cure. Following his diagnosis, he became an active voice for awareness and advocacy, authoring a book titled ‘Syd’s Voice’ and participating in fundraising efforts for MND research and support for fellow patients.
A stalwart for Gloucestershire, Lawrence enjoyed an impressive domestic career, taking 515 wickets in 185 First-Class matches and 155 wickets in 113 List A games.
Cricket communities around the world, particularly in England, have paid heartfelt tributes to Lawrence, celebrating not only his sporting achievements but also his courage and advocacy in the face of adversity.
