Wimbledon 2025: Why Is Sinner Wearing an Arm Sleeve in His Quarterfinal Clash?
London [UK], July 10: World No. 1 Jannik Sinner took the court for his Wimbledon 2025 quarterfinal clash against Ben Shelton on Wednesday wearing a white compression sleeve on his right elbow, the same area he injured during his previous match.
Sinner had slipped and fallen early in his fourth-round encounter against Grigor Dimitrov on Monday night, aggravating his elbow. The Italian star experienced discomfort while serving and hitting forehands, ultimately dropping the first two sets. However, he advanced after Dimitrov was forced to retire due to a chest muscle injury.
The three-time Grand Slam champion, who recently finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open, underwent an MRI scan on Tuesday and initially skipped his practice session. He later opted for a light hitting session indoors to test his fitness ahead of the quarterfinal.
Facing him across the net was No. 10 seed Ben Shelton, the 22-year-old American aiming for his third Grand Slam semifinal. Shelton previously reached that stage at the 2023 U.S. Open (losing to Novak Djokovic) and the 2025 Australian Open, where he was defeated by none other than Sinner.
Elsewhere in Wednesday’s action, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic faced No. 22 seed Flavio Cobolli in the other men’s quarterfinal.
On Tuesday, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and 2024 U.S. Open finalist Taylor Fritz secured their places in the semifinals with hard-fought victories.
