WPL 2025: Mithali Raj Lauds Shafali Verma’s Match-Winning Knock Against RCB

March 2, 2025: After Delhi Capitals’ dominant victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025, former India captain Mithali Raj showered praise on Shafali Verma for her brilliant performance. Verma was named Player of the Match for her unbeaten knock of 80 runs off 43 balls, guiding Delhi Capitals to a comfortable nine-wicket win.

The match saw debutant N Charani and Shikha Pandey picking up two wickets each to restrict RCB to a total of 147/5 in 20 overs. In response, Delhi Capitals chased down the target in just 15.3 overs, thanks to strong fifties from Shafali Verma and Australian all-rounder Jess Jonassen. This victory also marked Delhi Capitals’ second consecutive win, making them the first team to secure a playoff spot in the tournament.

Mithali Raj, while analyzing Shafali Verma’s performance, pointed out how the young batter has matured in her approach. She noted that Shafali understands her role well and is increasingly valuing her wicket, which could have a huge impact on her team’s total if she stays longer at the crease. Raj emphasized that Shafali’s ability to play longer innings and bat for 20 overs could result in big scores, including centuries in T20 cricket, which would significantly boost her team’s performance.

“Shafali now understands her role. If she values her wicket and bats for 20 overs, she’s already on 80 runs. She has the potential to be one of those batters who, if she plays a little longer, will have centuries to her name,” said Mithali Raj. The former captain also praised Shafali’s hitting, particularly during the middle overs when she unleashed massive sixes, one of which traveled 82 meters.

Raj also lauded Jess Jonassen’s performance, who played a crucial role in the chase with an explosive 61 runs off 38 balls. “She has embraced the number three role exceptionally well,” said Raj. “Just two innings and two fifties, it never seemed like she was someone pushed up from the lower order and struggling. Instead, she seized the opportunity to score runs without slowing down the momentum.”

Raj further highlighted the strong partnership between Shafali and Jess after Delhi Capitals lost the early wicket of Meg Lanning. Despite the early setback, both batters kept the scoreboard ticking, finding boundaries and rotating the strike effectively. Their understanding and communication on the field were key to their successful partnership.

With Delhi Capitals securing their playoff spot and looking in strong form, Mithali Raj’s praise further underlines the growing maturity and potential of the team, especially with players like Shafali Verma and Jess Jonassen leading the charge.
