Youngest World Chess Champion, D Gukesh, Bags This Much in Prize Earnings
December 14, 2024: Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh etched his name in history on Thursday, becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion at just 18 years old. Gukesh defeated defending champion Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in an intense 14th and final classical game of the World Chess Championship held in Singapore.
With this victory, Gukesh not only claimed the coveted title but also shattered the longstanding record of Russian Grandmaster Garry Kasparov, who had held the distinction of being the youngest champion at age 22. He now follows in the footsteps of Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand as only the second Indian to achieve this feat.

The World Chess Championship 2024 featured a lucrative prize pool. Each win in the championship games was valued at $200,000 (approximately ₹1.69 crore). Gukesh, who won three games, bagged a staggering $600,000 (around ₹5.07 crore).
Additionally, the total prize pool of $1.5 million (approximately ₹12.68 crore) was split equally between the two finalists, ensuring both received substantial earnings. This means Gukesh’s total winnings reached $1.35 million (approximately ₹11.45 crore), while Ding Liren, who won two games, took home $1.15 million (around ₹9.75 crore).
Reflecting on Gukesh’s achievement, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand expressed both surprise and admiration. “It’s historic because he is the youngest world champion ever. It’s also a surprise because 20 minutes before the end, it didn’t look like the championship would be decided today—we were expecting a tiebreaker on Friday,” Anand said in an exclusive interview.
When asked about Gukesh’s strengths, Anand highlighted his well-rounded game and mental resilience. “You have to excel in everything to win at this level. Gukesh has done that. He was very focused and dedicated, and he overcame every challenge thrown at him. He was rewarded for that today,” Anand added.
This monumental victory cements D Gukesh’s status as a new powerhouse in the world of chess, inspiring millions and ushering in a new era for Indian chess.
