Yuki Bhambri To Be crowned India’s Top Doubles Player After Miami Open Win Against Rohan Bopanna
March 23, 2025: Indian tennis veteran Yuki Bhambri is set to be crowned as the country’s top doubles player following his victory over Rohan Bopanna at the Miami Open in Florida on Sunday. The 32-year-old Bhambri’s win in the round of 32 will see him climb to the top of the ATP doubles rankings, marking a significant milestone in his career. His rise to number one in India follows a series of impressive performances in recent months.
Bhambri, who partnered with Portugal’s Nuno Borges, triumphed over the experienced duo of Bopanna and Ivan Dodig of Croatia with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 scoreline. This victory at the Miami Open has pushed Bhambri to number 29 in the live ATP doubles rankings, while Bopanna, who was the defending champion, slid down to 43. With the ATP doubles rankings set to be updated at the end of the Miami Open, Bhambri will officially take the top spot, ending Bopanna’s 286-week reign as India’s number one doubles player.
In addition to his Miami success, Bhambri has been in exceptional form this year. Earlier in March, he won his first-ever ATP 500 title at the Dubai Tennis Championships, partnering with Alexei Popyrin of Australia. The duo came from behind in the final to defeat Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten, the reigning US Open and Australian Open doubles champions, in a thrilling 3-6, 7-6(12), 10-8 victory.
Bhambri’s journey to the top has been marked by several notable achievements. Alongside his doubles triumphs, he has previously made waves in singles tennis, having broken into the top 100 and reached a career-high singles ranking of 83 in April 2018. However, Bhambri made the decision to focus on doubles in 2023, which has proven to be a successful choice. He also claimed three ATP 250 titles in the past, further solidifying his status as one of India’s top tennis players.
With his recent successes, Bhambri’s ascension to India’s number one doubles player is a testament to his hard work and determination. As he continues to impress on the court, his rise to the top of the doubles rankings will undoubtedly inspire future generations of Indian tennis players.
