Former Indian cricketer Sreesanth recently reflected on India’s historic victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup, held on September 24, 2007, at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
He emphasized that while captain MS Dhoni played a crucial role, it was the all-rounder Yuvraj Singh’s contributions that were instrumental to India’s success.
Sreesanth pointed out that the victory was a result of a collective team effort, highlighting the harmonious environment within the squad.
He stated, “It was the senior and junior combination. Dhoni was captain, but without Yuvraj, I don’t think we would have won the World Cup.”
He acknowledged the importance of teamwork, stating that the entire management supported the players, contributing to their triumph.
Yuvraj’s memorable performance in the tournament, particularly his stunning achievement of hitting six sixes in one over against Stuart Broad, laid the groundwork for India’s success. In the final, India faced off against arch-rivals Pakistan. The match was intense, with Dhoni making the bold decision to entrust the final over to Joginder Sharma. Despite some tension as Pakistan neared victory, Sreesanth’s catch of Misbah-ul-Haq ultimately secured India’s first T20 World Cup title.
Sreesanth, who is currently playing for the Gujarat Greats in the Legends League Cricket (LLC) in Jodhpur, recounted his personal contributions during the final, including catching crucial wickets.
He expressed pride in being part of a team that achieved such a historic feat, while Irfan Pathan’s remarkable bowling performance, which earned him the ‘Man of the Match’ title for taking 3/16, further underscored the team’s overall excellence.
