The Supreme Court on Friday granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the scrapped excise policy case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). A bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna referred his petition challenging the ED’s arrest to a larger bench.
While granting interim bail, the Supreme Court noted that Kejriwal had already been incarcerated for 90 days and acknowledged his status as an elected leader.
Kejriwal’s lawyer, Rishikesh Kumar, hailed the verdict as “a big victory.” He stated, “The Supreme Court has granted him interim bail, and the issue of Section 19 and the necessity of arrest has been referred to a larger bench. CM Kejriwal will remain in custody as his bail in the CBI case is still pending. This is a significant win.”
Supreme Court lawyer Shadan Farasat, representing Kejriwal, added, “The court observed that regarding his arrest, there are certain aspects on the necessity of it… They noted Mr. Kejriwal has already undergone a substantial period of incarceration and therefore directed his immediate release and bail in the ED matter.”
