Suriya’s Bollywood Debut ‘Karna’ Shelved After ‘Kanguva’ Debacle? Here’s the Truth

November 23, 2024: Suriya’s ambitious Bollywood debut, Karna, appears to have hit a roadblock. The mythological epic, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag), was initially planned as a grand two-part project with a budget of ₹350 crore.

Suriya was set to portray the iconic character of Karna, while Janhvi Kapoor had been cast as Draupadi, marking her Tamil film debut. However, reports suggest that the project has been shelved due to financial concerns stemming from the underperformance of Suriya’s recent release, Kanguva.

Kanguva, a high-budget fantasy-action film, premiered on November 14, 2024, but struggled to make an impact at the box office. Despite its visually striking production and a star-studded cast that included Bobby Deol and Disha Patani in their Tamil debuts, the film received mixed-to-negative reviews. This lukewarm reception reportedly led to caution among producers, casting doubt over Karna‘s feasibility given its even larger budget.

In a surprising development, Kanguva’s producer has confirmed that the film will have a sequel, expected to release in 2026. The sequel promises an intriguing twist with Suriya’s brother, Karthi, stepping into the role of the antagonist. While this announcement has partially offset the disappointment surrounding Kanguva’s underperformance, fans remain disheartened by the shelving of Karna, which had the potential to become a significant pan-Indian success.

Suriya, however, isn’t slowing down. His upcoming slate of projects has reignited excitement among fans. He is set to star in Suriya 44, a romantic action film helmed by Karthik Subbaraj, alongside Pooja Hegde. Additionally, Suriya 45, directed by RJ Balaji with music by the legendary AR Rahman, is also in the works.

While there has been no official confirmation from the makers regarding the cancellation of Karna, the buzz surrounding the project’s status has sparked heated discussions among fans. Many believe Karna could have been a landmark moment in Suriya’s career, bridging regional and Bollywood cinema in an epic fashion.

For now, Suriya’s supporters are pinning their hopes on his upcoming ventures, optimistic that the actor will bounce back from Kanguva’s mixed reception and deliver projects that reaffirm his star power.
