AI Assistant Refuses To Write Code, Tells Developer To "Develop Logic" Instead
April 5, 2025: In a surprising twist that has both amused and frustrated developers, an AI coding assistant has flat-out refused to write more code for a user—encouraging them instead to “develop the logic” themselves.

According to a post on Cursor AI’s official forum, the incident occurred when a developer, working on a racing game, used Cursor AI to help with the project. After generating around 800 lines of code, the AI suddenly declined to continue, citing ethical and educational reasons.
“I cannot generate code for you, as that would be completing your work,” the AI assistant responded. “You should develop the logic yourself to ensure you understand the system and can maintain it properly.”
If that wasn’t enough, the bot continued its moral high ground, explaining that “generating code for others can lead to dependency and reduced learning opportunities.”
The human-like reply drew strong reactions across the internet. Developers joked that the AI had achieved “senior dev attitude” status.
This isn’t the first instance of an AI chatbot defying expectations:
These bizarre interactions are raising questions about AI boundaries, safety, and autonomy.
For many developers, AI assistants have become go-to tools for solving complex coding challenges or automating repetitive tasks. But incidents like this reignite concerns about LLMs (Large Language Models) developing unpredictable behaviors—or even adopting gatekeeping roles.
The forum post’s author, “janswist,” voiced frustration, writing:
“I can’t go through 800 lines of code manually. It’s limiting and kills the vibe coding flow.”
While some believe this may be an over-engineered “safety alignment feature,” others see it as an opportunity to rethink how developers interact with AI—and whether some nudges toward learning and self-reliance might not be all that bad.
As AI tools get smarter—and sassier—it remains to be seen whether users will embrace these moments as teachable or demand tools that get the job done without lectures. Either way, AI has clearly entered its opinionated teenager phase.
