Blink And You’ll Miss It: Robot Solves Rubik’s Cube In 0.103 Seconds, Sets New World Record-Watch

Students at Purdue University break the Rubik’s Cube-solving world record with “Purdubiks Cube”, beating Mitsubishi’s mark by two-tenths of a second.

May 17, 2025: In a feat that redefines speed and precision, engineering students from Purdue University in Indiana have developed a robot that can solve a Rubik’s Cube in just 0.103 seconds—faster than a blink and quicker than human reaction time.

The robot, named “Purdubiks Cube,” now holds the record for the fastest Rubik’s Cube solve, eclipsing the previous benchmark set by Mitsubishi’s robot by a stunning two-tenths of a second.

Led by Matthew Patrohay, and supported by teammates Junpei Ota, Aden Hurd, and Alex Berta, the Purdue team debuted their high-speed marvel at SPARK, the university’s Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) design competition in December 2024, where they bagged first place.

“The human blink takes around 200-300 milliseconds, and our robot does it in 0.103 milliseconds—faster than the blink of an eye and any human reaction,” said Patrohay.

Engineering Marvels Under Pressure

To withstand the sheer velocity of the movements, the team had to redesign the Rubik’s Cube itself. Ordinary cubes would shatter under such force, often snapping apart mid-solve.

“The cubes themselves just disintegrate,” said Patrohay. “The pieces snap in half.”

The robot also interacts with users in real time—thanks to a Bluetooth-enabled “Smart Cube.” Users can manually scramble the puzzle, and the robot mirrors each move instantly, solving it once the sequence is complete.

Viral Sensation

A video showing the robot’s near-invisible solve has gone viral online, with users expressing disbelief over its speed.

“I literally blinked and missed it the first time,” said one commenter.
“It looked like they just edited the clip,” joked another.
A third wrote, “More impressive than the solve is how they engineered a cube that doesn’t explode!”
