#BringBackMasteries: Brawl Stars Players Revolt Over New Update

June 27, 2025: Brawl Stars, the popular mobile brawler by Supercell, is facing intense backlash from its player base after the controversial removal of the mastery system in its latest update. Replacing it with the new “records” system has sparked outrage, leading to the viral hashtag #BringBackMasteries trending across social media platforms like Reddit and X (formerly Twitter).

Why Are Players Upset?

The mastery system, first introduced in early 2023, offered players a clear and rewarding progression path. By consistently playing and performing well with individual brawlers, players earned points toward mastery tracks, unlocking pins, titles, and coins. While Supercell claims that only 12% of players earned mastery titles, many fans argue the system gave real value to consistent gameplay and strategy.

The new records system, introduced as a replacement, offers randomized “Starr Drops” as rewards for completing specific challenges. However, players say it lacks the structure and guaranteed rewards of masteries. “They remove masteries to stop people from being able to instantly unlock new brawlers for free,” one Reddit user wrote. “Then they release a broken brawler to push people to buy it.”

Others have voiced frustration over the difficulty of some challenges and the randomness of rewards, which they say feels more like gambling than a fair grind.

Organized Backlash Grows

On Reddit, threads demanding the return of masteries have gained hundreds of upvotes. On X, fans continue to post under #BringBackMasteries, calling out the update for ruining their motivation to play. Some have gone as far as suggesting a boycott of the records system to pressure Supercell into reverting the change.

Streamer and player Ekira Saawa wrote, “This update killed any reason I had to explore new brawlers. Mastery gave me purpose. Now? It’s just luck-based drops.”

Will Supercell Respond?

While Supercell has not yet officially responded to the outcry, the company has a history of rolling back or adjusting controversial changes. Many are hoping that the growing outcry will force the developer to either reinstate masteries or offer a hybrid system that incorporates both records and mastery progression.

Until then, the Brawl Stars community appears united in its demand: Bring back masteries — or risk losing player loyalty.
