Comet by Perplexity: Will This AI Browser Finally Shake Google?

July 10, 2025: Perplexity has launched its first-ever AI-powered web browser, Comet, in a bold move to challenge Google Search and redefine how users interact with the internet. Initially available to subscribers of Perplexity’s $200/month Max plan and select waitlist users, Comet is not just another browser — it places AI at the center of the user experience.

Comet by Perplexity: Will This AI Browser Finally Shake Google?

At its core, Comet comes equipped with Perplexity’s AI search engine by default, offering users concise, AI-generated summaries of search results. But its most standout feature is Comet Assistant, an AI sidekick built into the browser. This assistant can summarize emails, manage calendar events, navigate web pages, and even interact with social media posts or YouTube videos — all from a sidecar that sees and understands the current web page.

CEO Aravind Srinivas has hyped Comet as the foundation for an “operating system” that could handle nearly all digital tasks, emphasizing that becoming the user’s default browser is key to long-term success. With over 780 million monthly queries and 20% month-over-month growth, Perplexity has momentum — but taking on Google Chrome and Apple Safari won’t be easy.

Comet Assistant shows promise in routine tasks like summarizing emails or flagging calendar reminders. However, it stumbles on more complex actions. In one instance, it hallucinated booking information for airport parking, entered incorrect dates, and then urged the user to proceed anyway. These limitations mirror issues seen in other AI agents like OpenAI’s Operator.

Still, the seamless integration of an AI assistant into browsing represents a compelling leap forward. As more users explore AI-first alternatives, Comet could mark the beginning of a significant shift — if it can fix reliability issues and win over users from entrenched giants like Chrome.
