December 14, 2024: Suchir Balaji, a 26-year-old former AI researcher at OpenAI, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on November 26, reportedly by suicide. The San Francisco Police Department confirmed that no foul play was suspected during their initial investigation.

Balaji, who worked with OpenAI from November 2020 to August 2024, was known for his contributions to generative AI, including ChatGPT, and for his vocal concerns over AI ethics and fair use. In October, Balaji penned a blog post criticizing the “fair use” defense often cited by generative AI companies, concluding that products like ChatGPT compete directly with their training data.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a longtime critic of OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, reacted to news of Balaji’s death with a cryptic “Hmm” on X (formerly Twitter). Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 before exiting in 2018 to start rival AI firm xAI, has repeatedly accused OpenAI of monopolistic practices and copyright violations.

Balaji’s insights on fair use were widely discussed in the AI community. He broke down four key factors determining fair use, including its impact on the market for copyrighted works. Notably, he concluded that “none of the four factors seem to weigh in favour of ChatGPT being a fair use.”
Balaji’s tragic passing adds to the growing tension in the tech world, where generative AI’s ethical boundaries and legal implications remain highly debated.
