Samsung Unpacked: Is the $2000 Galaxy Z Fold 7 Worth the Hype?

July 9, 2025: Samsung Unpacked has officially pulled the wraps off its sleekest and most powerful foldable phone yet — the Galaxy Z Fold 7 — during its Samsung Unpacked summer showcase in Brooklyn, New York. Priced at $2000, the book-style foldable is not only thinner and lighter than ever, but it’s also packed with AI-driven features designed to compete at the ultra-premium end of the market.

Measuring just 8.9 mm when folded and weighing 215 grams, the Fold 7 narrowly misses the “world’s thinnest” title, which still belongs to Honor’s Magic V5 at 8.8 mm. Still, Samsung is betting big that its refined design and durability improvements will reignite consumer interest in a market segment that hasn’t fully taken off since its debut in 2019.

“The Galaxy Z Fold 7 could play an important role in driving renewed interest,” said CCS Insight’s chief analyst Ben Wood, noting the device’s more competitive design and better durability.

Alongside the Fold 7, Samsung also launched the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the more affordable Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, priced at $1,099.99 and $899.99 respectively. The Flip 7 FE in particular is seen as a potential gateway device for consumers who were previously priced out of the foldable experience.

Foldables remain a niche market — with just 2% of global smartphone share predicted in 2025 — but Samsung is positioning itself as a long-term leader in this space, especially in key markets like India, where the new foldables are being manufactured locally.

With rivals like Apple still absent from the foldables game (though rumored to be developing one), Samsung sees this as a crucial window to dominate a futuristic form factor. As the tech giant doubles down on innovation, its biggest challenge remains convincing consumers that foldables aren’t just flashy — they’re practical, durable, and worth the premium.
