After securing a 20-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad humorously highlighted MS Dhoni’s pivotal cameo, referring to him as the “young wicketkeeper” whose hat-trick of sixes in the final over was instrumental in deciding the match’s outcome.
The match at Wankhede Stadium saw Rohit Sharma score a formidable second IPL century, but it wasn’t enough as Matheesha Pathirana’s impressive four-wicket haul kept MI to 186/6. Meanwhile, Dhoni’s explosive batting in the final moments propelled CSK from 186 to 206/4, providing the crucial edge.
Post-match, Gaikwad shared, “The sixes from our young wicketkeeper-batsman made a huge difference today. Those extra runs were vital given the nature of this ground. Bumrah bowled exceptionally well through the middle overs which kept things tight. However, our execution with the ball was spot on. Matheesha, our ‘Baby Malinga’, delivered an outstanding performance, particularly with his yorkers. Tushar and Shardul also bowled well.”
He continued to reflect on team dynamics and his role, “Managing the innings as a captain and being flexible with the batting order, especially with Jinks managing a niggle and me adjusting my batting position, was key. We aim to maintain a positive environment and simple strategies as we progress in the tournament.”
CSK now sits third on the leaderboard with eight points from six matches, while MI is eighth, having secured four points from six games. This win not only boosted CSK’s standing but also underscored the critical impact of Dhoni’s undiminished prowess in the sport.
