Bengaluru, October 19, 2024: After a disastrous collapse in the first innings, India staged a spirited fightback on day three of the rain-affected first Test against New Zealand. Led by resilient innings from Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan, India ended the day at 231/3, still trailing by 125 runs with two days remaining.
The day began with cautious but determined batting from openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rohit reached his seventeenth Test fifty before being bowled by Ajaz Patel for 52, while Jaiswal, after a solid start, was stumped by Tom Blundell off Patel’s bowling for 35. India found themselves at 95/2, still under pressure from the disciplined New Zealand bowling attack.
Ajaz Patel, who has haunted Indian batters before with his 10-wicket haul in 2021, once again troubled them with his sharp spin. The left-arm spinner finished the day with figures of 2/70, continuing his knack for crucial breakthroughs. “Patel remains a constant threat to the Indian batters, just as he was during his record-breaking performance in 2021,” said a commentator during the match.
Virat Kohli, dismissed for a duck in the first innings, came back stronger in the second, playing a counter-attacking knock of 70. With this innings, Kohli not only stabilized India’s position but also became the 18th player to reach 9,000 runs in Test cricket. “Today, Virat showed why he’s still a force to be reckoned with in Test cricket,” noted a cricket analyst. Kohli’s gritty effort marked his first Test half-century since December 2023 and was crucial in reviving India’s hopes.
Sarfaraz Khan, also out for a duck in the first innings, remained unbeaten on 70 off 78 balls, hitting seven boundaries and three sixes. His third fifty in his third Test match highlighted the youngster’s resilience under pressure, and he forged a vital 136-run partnership with Kohli that bolstered India’s innings.
Kohli’s 70-run innings not only marked a significant turnaround from his earlier dismissal but also saw him achieving a major career milestone. He became the fourth Indian to join the prestigious 9,000-run club in Tests, joining the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar. In the global arena, he joined Joe Root and Steve Smith as the only active players with 9,000 Test runs.
However, the task is far from over for India. Trailing by 125 runs, they will face a renewed challenge from New Zealand’s bowlers on the fourth morning. Ajaz Patel has been their key weapon, and Glenn Phillips managed to take the crucial wicket of Kohli, showing that India will need to brace themselves against a disciplined attack.
