Veteran New Zealand pacer Tim Southee has stepped down as the team’s Test captain, with wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham set to lead the Kiwis in their upcoming three-match Test series against India. This leadership change follows New Zealand’s 2-0 series loss to Sri Lanka, including a crushing defeat by an innings and 154 runs in Galle.
Southee, who took over from Kane Williamson in late 2022, led New Zealand in 14 Tests, securing six wins, two draws, and six losses.
At 35, he emphasized that stepping down was in the team’s best interests, allowing him to focus on his bowling performances. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead, stating, “Captaining the Black Caps in a format that’s so special to me, has been an absolute honour and a privilege”.
Latham, who has previously captained New Zealand in nine Tests, will take over as the full-time Test captain, starting with the India series on October 16, 2024.
