Tom Latham: ‘Unexpected Weather Could Boost Fast Bowlers in Bengaluru Test’

Bengaluru, October 16, 2024: Ahead of the three-match Test series against India, New Zealand captain Tom Latham shared his thoughts on the unexpected weather conditions in Bengaluru. As the first Test approaches, Latham acknowledged that the cooler-than-expected temperatures could play a significant role in the game, particularly for the fast bowlers.

“We did not expect this kind of weather; it’s not as hot as we anticipated, which could potentially bring the fast bowlers into play. We’ll review the previous game played here, but it’s hard to say for sure at the moment,” Latham said during the pre-match press conference.

Reflecting on their previous match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Latham fondly recalled Tim Southee’s standout performance, where he took 7 wickets for 60 runs. With Ben Sears ruled out, Latham expressed confidence in Southee’s ability to replicate that success.

“I think the last time we played a Test here, Tim took 7 for 60. Obviously, with Ben Sears ruled out, if we do go with three seamers, Tim will definitely be a key part of the equation,” Latham added.

The New Zealand skipper also praised India’s fast-bowling unit, recognizing the strength of players like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep.

“When you think of playing in these conditions, you naturally focus on the spinners. But India also has an equally formidable pace attack with Bumrah, Siraj, and Akash Deep, who’s played the last couple of Tests against Bangladesh. It’s a well-rounded side,” Latham remarked.

Latham has taken over as New Zealand’s captain for this series after Tim Southee stepped down following the previous series.

New Zealand squad:
