12 Meetings in 10 Hours: PM Modi’s Power-Packed Diplomacy at G7 Summit in Canada

From Germany to Japan, Modi engages world leaders in whirlwind bilateral talks spanning trade, tech, and global security during G7 meet in Kananaskis

June 18, 2025 | In a display of high-octane diplomacy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held 12 key bilateral meetings within just 10 hours at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada. From major world powers to emerging economies, PM Modi used his brief but impactful presence at the summit to bolster India’s global outreach.

Modi’s packed schedule included first-time interactions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and South Korean Prime Minister Lee Jae-myung. His meetings with leaders from France, the UK, Italy, Japan, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, and the European Union further underscored India’s growing strategic clout.

Warm Welcome by Canada’s PM Carney
PM Modi was officially welcomed to the summit by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Their handshake marked a diplomatic thaw between the two nations, which had recently agreed to restore full ambassadorial ties.

Strengthening Ties Across Continents
Calling his meeting with German Chancellor Merz “delightful,” Modi emphasized collaboration in counter-terrorism and terror financing. With Korean PM Lee, both sides committed to enhancing trade, green hydrogen, and technology partnerships.

His conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron was described as a “delightful interaction,” covering a wide range of strategic and bilateral issues. UK PM Keir Starmer’s meeting was termed “exceptional,” with Modi affirming both nations would “add further momentum to this wonderful friendship.”

New Partnerships in Latin America and Europe
Mexico’s President Sheinbaum and PM Modi discussed enhanced cooperation in innovation, pharma, startups, and people-to-people exchange. Modi expressed confidence in Italy-India ties after engaging with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, reaffirming shared goals for mutual prosperity.

Asia-Pacific and Beyond
Japan’s PM Shigeru Ishiba reiterated strong bilateral commitment with India across diverse sectors. Meetings with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Australian PM Anthony Albanese, and Brazilian President Lula da Silva rounded out Modi’s multilateral push.

MEA on Expanding Cooperation
India’s Ministry of External Affairs highlighted discussions on trade, investment, technology, green energy, pharmaceuticals, and cultural exchange as central to these engagements.

Despite the summit’s tight timeline, PM Modi’s strategic diplomacy ensured India’s presence was not just visible but influential, deepening partnerships across continents and signaling India’s assertive role on the world stage.
