Today in Texas: Devastating floods leave 24 dead, 23 girls unaccounted for from Camp Mystic as families, officials, and communities join rescue mission

Texas, July 5: Heartbreaking new details have emerged following the catastrophic floods in central Texas that struck on July 4, leaving at least 24 people dead and dozens still missing. Among the most alarming developments is the disappearance of 23 young girls from Camp Mystic, a Christian all-girls summer camp near the Guadalupe River in Kerr County. As families continue to search, state officials have mobilized emergency resources while the tragedy grips the nation.

Camp Mystic Flood Horror: 23 Girls Still Missing

According to Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, 23 girls remain unaccounted for out of approximately 750 campers who were present at Camp Mystic when flash floods caused the Guadalupe River to rise to its second-highest level in history, as reported by ABC affiliate Eyewitness News.

Among the missing is Hadley Hannah, 8, from Dallas, whose father is actively searching for her on the ground in Kerr County, according to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth. Two other Dallas girls, Eloise Peck and Lila Bonner, also remain missing, reportedly last seen in the same cabin with several others now unaccounted for, per the New York Post.

Multiple Families Await Word Amid Widespread Despair

The list of missing includes Lila Bonner, Kellyanne Lytal, Molly DeWitt, Janie Hunt, and Lainey Landry, according to multiple family reports cited by KSAT, Fox 26 Houston, and CNN.

“We are just praying,” Janie Hunt’s mother told CNN, echoing the hope and anxiety shared by dozens of families.

Greta Toranzo, A Young Student, Among the Missing

Another girl, Greta Toranzo, a student at Sinclair Elementary, remains missing, as confirmed in a heartbreaking Instagram post by the school.

“We are devastated to share that one of our Sinclair students is missing from Camp Mystic in the Kerr County Floods,” the post read.
“Her parents have asked that her picture be shared far and wide as they search for her. Please keep Greta and her family in your thoughts.”

Another camper, Virginia Hollis, is also still missing, according to WANE 15.

Evacuation and Emergency Response

KSAT reported that Camp Mystic was evacuated overnight as floodwaters surged. The disaster has prompted an urgent and ongoing search-and-rescue operation. The flood’s destructive impact was especially severe in Kerr County, which recorded the highest death toll, and Kendall County, where at least one death occurred.

In a statement on July 4, Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the deployment of state emergency resources to affected areas including Kerrville, Ingram, Hunt, and the wider Texas Hill Country.

“The State of Texas today has mobilized additional resources in addition to the resources sent in preparation for the storms,” Abbott stated.
“I urge Texans to heed guidance from state and local officials and monitor local forecasts to avoid driving into flooded areas.”

Search Continues as Families Plead for Help

As of now, there has been no official update from the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office regarding the status of the missing girls. Families and volunteers continue to hold onto hope, sharing photos and organizing searches across the flood-hit areas.

The flood has left a deep scar across the state, and the tragedy at Camp Mystic stands as one of the most emotional chapters in Texas’ long history of weather-related disasters.
