In a major push to ease traffic congestion, the Centre has announced plans to make three key stretches in Delhi NCR largely signal-free through infrastructure upgrades, including flyovers and interchanges.

The identified corridors include:

  • Ashram to Badarpur
  • Mehrauli to Gurgaon
  • Punjabi Bagh to Tikri Border

Major Upgrades Planned

According to the government, these stretches will see the construction of multiple flyovers to reduce congestion at busy intersections. Additionally, a grade-separated interchange is proposed at Kalindi Kunj—one of the most crowded junctions where several roads converge—to eliminate traffic bottlenecks.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently preparing detailed project reports for these upgrades.

Expected Travel Time Reduction

The improvements are expected to significantly cut travel time:

  • Ashram–Badarpur: From up to 90 minutes to much shorter durations with three new flyovers
  • Mehrauli–Gurgaon: From nearly 1 hour to around 15 minutes
  • Punjabi Bagh–Tikri Border: From about 90 minutes to nearly 30 minutes

Broader Infrastructure Boost

Officials also highlighted that the interchange at Kalindi Kunj will be designed on the lines of the Dhaula Kuan model to ensure smoother traffic flow. Meanwhile, the DND–Faridabad stretch of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is expected to be operational within six months.

In addition, the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor is nearing completion and is likely to open soon, potentially reducing travel time between Delhi and Dehradun to under 2.5 hours.

These projects are part of a broader effort to improve urban mobility and reduce daily commute stress across the NCR region.
