Quake hits near Silivri in the Sea of Marmara; tremors felt across western Turkiye as aftershocks continue, no casualties reported yet

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck Turkiye on Wednesday afternoon, with tremors centered near Silivri in the Sea of Marmara, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The seismic event occurred at 3:19 PM IST (10:49 AM local time), at a depth of 10 kilometers, located at latitude 40.99° N and longitude 28.10° E, as confirmed by the NCS in a post on X.
“EQ of M: 6.0, On: 23/04/2025 15:19:11 IST, Lat: 40.99 N, Long: 28.10 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Turkey,” the agency wrote.
According to Turkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), the quake’s epicenter lies offshore in the Sea of Marmara, and aftershocks are ongoing. There have been no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, but assessments are underway in the affected areas.

Turkiye lies in one of the most earthquake-prone zones in the world, sitting atop the North Anatolian and East Anatolian fault lines. These tectonic boundaries have historically produced high-intensity earthquakes, with devastating consequences in the past.
