"A Good Headache to Have": Rohit Sharma on Team Selection Dilemma Ahead of Semi-Final Clash Against Australia
Dubai, March 3: India captain Rohit Sharma admitted that team selection for the semi-final against Australia has become a “good headache” after Varun Chakravarthy’s match-winning five-wicket haul dismantled New Zealand in India’s final ICC Champions Trophy 2025 group-stage match.
Having already secured a spot in the knockouts, India dominated the Blackcaps, defending a 250-run target with ease. The highlight of the match was Chakravarthy’s sensational 5/42, which left the Kiwi middle order clueless and secured him the Player of the Match award.
For the first two matches, Chakravarthy waited patiently on the sidelines. But when given an opportunity against New Zealand, he made an immediate impact, proving to be India’s trump card ahead of their semi-final showdown against five-time ICC Champions Trophy winners Australia.
“He has something different about him, so we wanted to try and see what he can offer. We haven’t thought much about the next game yet, but it’s a good headache to have,” said Rohit Sharma in the post-match presentation.
The mystery spinner ran through New Zealand’s lineup, using his deceptive googlies to perfection and breaking crucial partnerships at key moments. His spell sealed India’s third consecutive win in the tournament, ensuring they topped Group A.
With India vs. Australia set for March 4 in Dubai, the cricketing world is gearing up for yet another intense battle between the two giants. Rohit Sharma acknowledged Australia’s dominance in ICC events but emphasized that India’s focus remains on executing their plans to perfection.
“Australia has a rich history of playing ICC tournaments well, but it is about us and what we want to do well on that particular day. It will be a great contest; I’m looking forward to that,” he added.
Rohit also stressed the importance of quickly fixing errors in a short tournament like the Champions Trophy, where there is no room for complacency.
“It is critical to win every game and do everything right. In a short tournament, it is important to correct mistakes quickly, and that’s where we know if our team is going up or down,” he said.
With Chakravarthy making a strong case for himself, the Indian team management now faces a selection conundrum. The experienced spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel has already performed well, but Chakravarthy’s X-factor gives India another strategic advantage.
The final call will depend on the conditions, but India’s bowling unit is brimming with confidence heading into the semi-finals.
✅ Defeated Bangladesh by 8 wickets
✅ Defeated Pakistan by 6 wickets
✅ Defeated New Zealand by 44 runs
With three wins in three matches, India finished at the top of Group A, setting up a blockbuster semi-final clash with Australia.
This semi-final will be the latest chapter in one of cricket’s most intense rivalries. Australia, the reigning ODI World Cup champions, will be looking to assert their dominance, while India will be eager to avenge their 2023 World Cup final defeat and book a spot in the Champions Trophy final.
With Rohit’s leadership, Varun’s spin magic, and a well-balanced squad, India has all the tools to outclass Australia—but can they rise to the occasion?
