A Tree for Peace? S. Jaishankar’s Symbolic Start in China

July 14, 2025: As part of the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar planted a pomegranate sapling at the Indian Embassy in Beijing on Monday, marking both a symbolic and diplomatic gesture on his first visit to China in five years. The visit comes after his trip to Singapore and includes participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Tianjin, as well as several key bilateral meetings.

Earlier in the day, Jaishankar met SCO Secretary General Nurlan Yermekbayev and discussed the organisation’s evolving role and modernization efforts. “Discussed the contribution and importance of SCO, as well as the endeavours to modernise its working,” he posted.

A major highlight of the day was his meeting with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. Jaishankar conveyed India’s support for China’s SCO presidency and acknowledged improvements in bilateral ties. “Expressed confidence that discussions during my visit will maintain that positive trajectory,” he noted.

He is also expected to hold talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The two last met in February during the G20 summit in Johannesburg, where they emphasized mutual trust and cooperation.

This marks Jaishankar’s first visit to China since tensions escalated following the Galwan Valley clash in 2020. His trip follows those of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and NSA Ajit Doval, who visited Beijing last month for SCO-related engagements.
