Alarming Intel Prompted US to Intervene in India-Pakistan Conflict, Claims Report
New Delhi/Washington | May 11, 2025:
A CNN report has revealed that alarming intelligence received by the US administration on Friday, May 9, compelled US Vice President JD Vance to initiate direct contact with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging de-escalation amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

According to senior US officials cited in the report, Vance, along with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Secretary of State and Interim National Security Adviser Marco Rubio, had been closely monitoring the deteriorating security situation following India’s Operation Sindoor and retaliatory Pakistani drone and missile strikes.
The nature of the intelligence has not been disclosed due to its classified status. However, after briefing President Donald Trump, Vance reached out to PM Modi, warning that the situation could spiral into a full-blown conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
US sources claim that at the time of contact, India and Pakistan were not engaged in direct communication, raising concerns in Washington about the risk of uncontrolled escalation. Vance is said to have proposed a potential diplomatic “off-ramp” the US believed Pakistan might accept, and encouraged India to reinitiate direct dialogue.
Following the Vance-Modi conversation, Marco Rubio and other State Department officials launched a marathon backchannel operation, speaking to both Indian and Pakistani counterparts through the night, sources told CNN. These efforts were not aimed at drafting the ceasefire itself, but rather to facilitate a return to talks between both sides.
Interestingly, this outreach came just a day after Vance had dismissed calls for US intervention by saying the conflict was “none of our business.” However, the gravity of the intelligence reportedly forced a recalibration.
The ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan was finally announced on May 10, following nearly three weeks of military clashes, particularly after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that killed 26 people.
