The German star defeats Tommy Paul in a four-set thriller, advancing to his third Grand Slam semi-final.
Melbourne [Australia], January 21: Alexander Zverev continues his impressive run at the Australian Open 2025, securing a spot in the semi-finals with a hard-fought 7-6(1), 7-6(0), 2-6, 6-1 victory over American Tommy Paul on Tuesday.
Zverev, currently ranked World No. 2, will now face the winner of the highly anticipated match between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. This marks Zverev’s third Grand Slam semi-final appearance and his second at the Australian Open, where he previously reached the same stage in 2023.
“I Should Have Been Down Two Sets to Love”: Zverev
Reflecting on his win, Zverev acknowledged the challenges posed by Tommy Paul and admitted that his opponent outplayed him in the early stages.
“To be honest, I should have been down two sets to love. He played better than me. I was not playing great, and I thought he was. I somehow won the first set, somehow won the second set, and I’m up two sets to love all of a sudden,” Zverev told ATP after the match.
However, he credited his fourth-set performance as his best of the tournament so far. “The fourth set was definitely the best that I’ve played, and I’m obviously extremely happy to be back in the semi-finals now,” he added.
Match Highlights
The match was a rollercoaster, with Zverev narrowly clinching the first two sets in tiebreakers. Tommy Paul fought back in the third set, displaying grit and precision to win 6-2. But Zverev’s experience and resilience shone through in the fourth, where he dominated to close out the match 6-1.
Zverev’s Streak Continues
Earlier in the tournament, Zverev showcased his dominance against left-handed players, extending his unbeaten streak to 26 consecutive victories with a four-set win over Ugo Humbert in the fourth round. Despite being one of the sport’s top-ranked players, Zverev is still chasing his maiden Grand Slam title.
As Zverev prepares for his next challenge, the tennis world is abuzz with anticipation for a potential showdown with either Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz.
