Amal Clooney Turns Heads at Cannes — And Quietly Breaks Festival Dress Code
Amal Clooney made a striking solo appearance at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on Friday, turning heads in a stunning black silk gown — and, in doing so, quietly defied the festival’s newly imposed dress code regulations.
Attending the premiere of Bono: Stories of Surrender, the 47-year-old human rights lawyer and producer walked the red carpet in a fitted off-the-shoulder evening gown. She paired the elegant look with loose waves in a glossy blowout and accessorized with dazzling drop earrings.
Despite her graceful entrance, Clooney’s ensemble appeared to subtly flout the updated red carpet rules instituted this year by festival organizers. According to the Cannes official guidelines, attendees are now prohibited from wearing “voluminous outfits” — including dresses with large trains — which are deemed obstructive to theater seating and guest flow. The updated code also explicitly bans nudity and restricts footwear to “elegant shoes and sandals,” with sneakers off-limits.
Nevertheless, Clooney was permitted entry without incident, and posed on the carpet alongside Bono and The Edge, both of whom star in the documentary. Though she and husband George Clooney were not involved in the production, their close friend Brad Pitt served as a producer on the Apple TV+ project.
Meanwhile, George Clooney remained in New York, currently starring in the Broadway adaptation of Good Night, and Good Luck, based on his 2005 directorial film.
The Apple TV+ documentary Bono: Stories of Surrender is described as a “bold and lyrical visual exploration” of the U2 frontman’s life and legacy. The film is based on his best-selling memoir Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story and the theatrical one-man show Stories of Surrender, and is set for global release on May 30.
The premiere attracted a constellation of stars, with Amal Clooney sharing red carpet space with Imogen Poots, Petra Nemcova, Kim Gordon, and Thora Birch, among others.
With her red carpet moment, Clooney effortlessly blended diplomacy with high fashion — even if it meant bending a few rules.
