In a rare tarmac incident, a Japan Airlines Boeing 787 collided with the tail of a parked Delta Airlines Boeing 737 during taxiing operations at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Wednesday morning. The collision occurred at approximately 10:17 AM local time, according to airport authorities.

Japan Airlines Flight 68, arriving from Tokyo’s Narita International Airport, was taxiing when its right wing clipped the tail of Delta Airlines Flight 1921, which was parked for deicing operations. At the time, the Japan Airlines flight carried 185 passengers and crew, while the Delta flight to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, had 142 passengers on board.

No Injuries, Passengers Evacuated Safely
Both airlines confirmed there were no injuries to passengers or crew. All individuals aboard the affected flights were safely deplaned and returned to the terminal via shuttle buses. Jason Chan, a passenger on the Delta flight, described the incident as “surreal,” mentioning that the collision caused the plane to jiggle slightly before the captain announced the situation.

The Japan Airlines statement noted, “The right wing of our Boeing 787 made contact with the Delta plane’s tail during taxiing. Fortunately, there were no injuries among the 172 passengers and 13 crew members.” Delta Airlines also confirmed the incident, stating that the passengers were transferred to a new aircraft for their journey.
Minimal Disruption to Airport Operations
Airport officials assured that operations were minimally affected since the incident occurred on a taxi lane. Emergency personnel promptly responded to the scene, assisting with the removal of the aircraft from the taxiway.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced an investigation into the incident, focusing on operational protocols and circumstances leading to the collision.
