Argentina Set to Face Colombia in Copa America 2024 Final

Defending champions Argentina will take on Colombia in the Copa America 2024 final at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Monday. The match is scheduled to start at 5:30 AM Indian Standard Time (IST). In India, there will be no live telecast or streaming available for the match.

This is only the second time in 48 editions that the Copa America is being held outside South America, with the United States hosting the 2024 tournament. Uruguay will face Canada in the third-place match.

Argentina, the most successful team in Copa America history with 15 titles, is aiming for its 16th championship. La Albiceleste has won the title 12 times during the South American Championship era (1916-1967). In contrast, Colombia has only one Copa America title, won in 2001.

Argentina triumphed over Brazil 1-0 in the 2021 Copa final. Following their 2022 FIFA World Cup victory, a win in Copa America 2024 would mark three consecutive major international titles for Lionel Messi and his team.

Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina enters the final unbeaten. They secured their spot in the 30th Copa America final with a 2-0 victory over Canada in the semi-finals, with goals from Julian Alvarez and Messi. In the quarterfinals, Argentina defeated Ecuador on penalties after winning all three group stage matches without conceding a goal.

If Messi plays against Colombia, it will be his record seventh major final, the most in international football history.

Colombia, coached by Argentine Nestor Lorenzo, is on a 28-match unbeaten streak. Los Cafeteros defeated Paraguay and Costa Rica while holding Brazil to a draw in the group stage. Led by James Rodriguez, Colombia secured a 5-0 win against Panama in the quarterfinals and overcame Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay in the semis to reach their third Copa America final.

Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez leads the Copa America 2024 Golden Boot race with four goals. His compatriot Julian Alvarez is also in the running with two goals, along with Colombia’s Jhon Cordoba and Luis Diaz, who have also netted two goals each.

While knockout matches in this edition of Copa America went directly to penalties if level after 90 minutes, the final will feature extra time.

The two South American teams have faced each other 43 times. Argentina has won 26 matches, while Colombia has emerged victorious nine times, with eight matches ending in draws. In the 2021 Copa America semi-final, the sides were tied 1-1 before Argentina won the penalty shootout 3-2 to advance to the final. Colombia’s last victory against Argentina was in the 2019 Copa America group stage, with a 2-0 win.
