As Pakistan Breaks Ceasefire Within Hours, China's Backing Sparks Diplomatic Alarm
May 11, 2025: Just hours after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire, Pakistan violated the truce with fresh shelling and drone activity in border areas — and China’s swift declaration of support for Islamabad has raised eyebrows in diplomatic circles.
According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during a phone call with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar, said that China “stands firmly” with Pakistan in defending its “sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national independence.”

The timing of the statement — released soon after reports emerged of Pakistan’s renewed military activity in Jammu and Kashmir — has drawn attention, particularly as regional leaders like J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi flagged fresh drone intrusions on social media.
As per Pakistan’s statement, Dar had briefed Wang Yi on the regional situation and the recent exchange of military fire with India, following the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives.
The Chinese side reportedly praised Islamabad’s “restraint” and “responsible approach under challenging circumstances.” China’s reaffirmation of its “all-weather strategic cooperative partnership” with Pakistan has stirred fresh scrutiny in New Delhi, especially given the sensitive timing.

Dar also held a similar briefing with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, signaling Pakistan’s outreach to traditional allies amid the brewing crisis.
Reacting to Pakistan’s ceasefire violation, India’s Defence Ministry issued a sharp statement:
“There have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier today between the DGMOs of India and Pakistan. The armed forces are responding appropriately and maintaining a strong vigil. Any further aggression will be met with decisive action.”
The breach and Beijing’s immediate support have added a new layer of complexity to an already fragile situation, casting doubts over the ceasefire’s longevity and raising concerns about regional power alignments.
