New Delhi, December 20: Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri heaped praise on Ravichandran Ashwin, describing the retired all-rounder as a player who constantly evolved to stay ahead in his craft. Speaking on the latest episode of The ICC Review, Shastri credited Ashwin’s desire to innovate as the key to his success.
“Ashwin’s Drive to Evolve Stood Out”
Shastri highlighted Ashwin’s relentless quest for improvement throughout his career, which culminated in 765 international wickets.
“What stands out for me was his wanting to evolve all the time,” Shastri said. “He was not satisfied with where he started. He wanted to learn new tricks, practised hard at them, and stayed ahead of the game.”
A Legacy of Greatness
Ashwin retired as one of India’s most decorated players, with 537 Test wickets, 156 ODI wickets, and 72 T20I scalps. Shastri pointed out his exceptional consistency, especially in the past five years.
“His legacy will be of being a terrific match-winner. Picking up over 500 wickets in Tests is a monumental achievement,” Shastri remarked.
Ashwin also boasts an impressive batting record with 3,503 Test runs, including six centuries, proving his all-round capabilities.
The Spin Twins: Ashwin and Jadeja
Shastri underscored the crucial partnership between Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, dubbing them “spin twins” who complemented each other brilliantly.
“They spurred each other on. Many of Jadeja’s wickets came because of Ashwin’s pressure, and vice-versa. Together, they were an unstoppable force,” he said.
Their combined averages when playing together—22.32 for Ashwin and 20.91 for Jadeja—reflect their synergy.
The Ultimate Competitor
Shastri lauded Ashwin’s guile and ability to adapt his skills to any challenge.
“His record against right-handers and left-handers is almost identical, proving how versatile he was. Whether it was drift, dip, or spin, he had everything in his arsenal,” Shastri explained.
A Storied Career
Ashwin ranks as India’s second-highest wicket-taker across formats, with 765 wickets, only behind Anil Kumble. Globally, he is seventh in Test cricket for most wickets.
His contributions extended to India’s triumphs in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy, solidifying his place among the greats of the game.
“India is fortunate to have had a player like Ashwin,” Shastri concluded.
