Asian Champions Trophy : India Secures Hard-Fought 1-0 Victory Over China To Retain Title

India successfully lifted their fifth Men’s Asian Champions Trophy with a tense 1-0 victory over host nation China.

The win, which followed titles in 2011, 2016, 2018, and 2023, showcased India’s resilience and continued dominance under coach Craig Fulton’s leadership, affectionately dubbed “Fultonball.”

China’s strong defensive play tested India’s mettle throughout the match. Early nerves for India allowed China to press, but they couldn’t capitalize. Indian players like Vivek Sagar Prasad and Sukhjeet tried to breach the Chinese defense, but China’s goalkeeper Wang Weihao was exceptional, denying multiple attempts.

India’s Harmanpreet Singh, showing brilliance, earned penalty corners, but even his drag flicks didn’t bear fruit. At the other end, Indian goalkeeper Krishan Pathak made crucial saves, especially after a mistake led to China earning a penalty corner in the first quarter.

Despite dominating possession (84% at halftime), India couldn’t convert their chances, leading to frustration. China threatened on penalty corners, but India held firm. Finally, in the last quarter, a clever play between Harmanpreet and Jugraj Singh led to India’s decisive goal, breaking the deadlock. China’s last push was hampered by their goalkeeper being sent off, and India held on to clinch the trophy.

India’s unbeaten run throughout the tournament culminated in this hard-fought win, with their defense playing a crucial role in retaining the title.
