Atishi Accuses BJP of ‘Hooliganism’ Ahead of Delhi Polls, Demands Action from EC

AAP alleges intimidation and violence by BJP workers in Kalkaji constituency; CM Kejriwal calls it an act of desperation amid impending defeat.

New Delhi, January 22: As the Delhi assembly elections approach, tensions are escalating between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Delhi Chief Minister Atishi accused BJP candidate Ramesh Bidhuri and his workers of creating an “atmosphere of terror” in the Kalkaji constituency.

Atishi alleged incidents of hooliganism, threats, and destruction of campaign materials by BJP workers. She demanded immediate action from the Election Commission of India (ECI) during a press conference on Wednesday.

“Ramesh Bidhuri and his workers are not contesting elections—they are engaging in hooliganism. We demand that the Election Commission take strict action,” Atishi said.

Claims of Intimidation and Threats

Atishi accused individuals claiming to be Bidhuri’s nephews of threatening AAP workers, grabbing their collars, and burning campaign materials. She cited multiple incidents, including verbal abuse and physical assault, and accused BJP workers of deploying children to put up posters in Kalkaji.

“AAP ward president Arun Chauhan was abused and had his pamphlets snatched. Another worker, Ankit Gupta, was slapped by BJP workers on January 19,” she added.

Atishi also claimed that Deepa Singh, an AAP worker in Govindpuri, received a threatening call from Bidhuri, allegedly warning her to rejoin the BJP or face arrest after the elections.

Kejriwal Joins the Criticism

AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal joined the media briefing, accusing the BJP of resorting to violence out of desperation.

“Violence is a sign of defeat. BJP knows it is heading toward a historic loss in Delhi. This hooliganism shows their frustration,” Kejriwal said.

He further alleged that the Delhi Police, under Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is aiding BJP workers in their activities. “Amit Shah has turned Delhi Police into a campaign wing for BJP. They are openly supporting BJP’s goons,” Kejriwal charged.

Intensifying Political Rivalry

The AAP’s accusations come as political rivalry between the ruling party and BJP intensifies. Delhi is set for a three-way contest between AAP, BJP, and Congress. AAP, which dominated the 2020 elections by winning 62 of 70 seats, is confident of retaining power.

The national capital goes to the polls on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8.
