Azmatullah Omarzai Named ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer Of The Year

January 27, 2025: Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai was named the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2024, following an exceptional performance in the 50-over format, as reported by the ICC.

The 24-year-old all-rounder had a remarkable year, becoming his team’s second-highest run scorer and second-highest wicket-taker, contributing to Afghanistan’s four ODI series wins in 2024 against teams like Ireland, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe.

Azmatullah’s performances were a standout across both batting and bowling. He averaged 52.12 with the bat and took wickets at an average of 20.47. His season was highlighted by several memorable moments:

In his first ODI of the year, he scored an unbeaten 149* against Sri Lanka, a valiant effort despite Afghanistan’s defeat.

Against South Africa, his 86 off 50 balls* helped Afghanistan win the second ODI and secure the series.

One of his finest performances came in the third ODI against Bangladesh in November. With the series on the line, Azmatullah bowled 4/37 in seven overs, including a match-winning spell in the death overs. He also played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s chase, finishing unbeaten on 70 from 77 balls* to guide his team to victory and the series win.

His all-around brilliance throughout the year made him a pivotal figure for Afghanistan, and his match-winning contributions were a key factor in their successful series campaigns.
