Batting coach backs Ayush Badoni’s selection for final NZ ODIs

January 14, 2026: Washington Sundar’s injury ahead of the final two ODIs against New Zealand opened the door for Ayush Badoni’s inclusion, a move that drew mixed reactions from fans and experts alike. While some felt players like Riyan Parag or Rinku Singh could have been considered, the team management defended the selection of the Delhi youngster. Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said Badoni’s consistent performances in India A matches and the IPL made him a suitable replacement for Sundar.

Explaining the decision, Kotak stressed the importance of having a sixth bowling option in the XI. He noted that Badoni’s ability to contribute with the bat and offer useful right-arm off-breaks makes him a like-for-like option. Kotak highlighted that in case of an in-match injury to a frontline bowler, having an additional bowling option is crucial in limited-overs cricket, adding that Badoni has shown the capability to bowl four to five overs if required.

Badoni’s numbers support the selectors’ call. In 27 List A matches, he has scored 693 runs at an average of 36.47, including a century and five half-centuries, while also picking up 18 wickets. He has impressed on India A tours and has been a reliable middle-order batter for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, scoring 963 runs across 56 matches. With his all-round skill set, Badoni will be keen to justify the faith shown in him during the remaining ODIs.
