BCCI Discreetly Omits Jasprit Bumrah from India’s ODI Squad Against England, Building Suspense

With no official update from the BCCI, uncertainty looms over Bumrah’s availability for the Champions Trophy.

February 5, 2025: Jasprit Bumrah, India’s star pacer, has been quietly removed from the 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England. This comes amid growing suspense surrounding his fitness following back spasms sustained during the Sydney Test against Australia. While hopes were initially high for a speedy recovery after his inclusion in the Champions Trophy and ODI squad, his omission now raises fresh concerns.

During the squad announcement in January, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar hinted that Bumrah might feature in the third ODI against England, depending on his fitness. However, a BCCI release on Tuesday evening confirmed the addition of spinner Varun Chakravarthy to the ODI squad without mentioning Bumrah’s absence.

Reports suggest that Bumrah has already reported to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for further assessment. His return will depend on clearance from the NCA’s physios, with no official statement yet from the BCCI. This uncertainty is especially worrying as the Champions Trophy is less than two weeks away.

The Indian management now has until February 11 to finalize their squad for the Champions Trophy, leaving eight days to decide on Bumrah’s participation in the marquee event.
