BCCI To Hold Special General Meeting To Elect New Secretary, Treasurer

December 21, 2024: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a special general meeting on January 12, 2024, during which it will elect its new secretary and treasurer. This meeting comes at a significant time, following the elevation of Jay Shah, the former BCCI secretary, to the role of Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) from December 1, 2023.

Jay Shah’s tenure at the BCCI was marked by significant achievements, most notably overseeing the construction of the world’s largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, and successfully organizing the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India. His leadership within the BCCI helped steer the organization through key developments in Indian cricket.

Now as ICC Chairman, Shah has been instrumental in resolving the long-standing issue regarding the hosting rights of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. After much deliberation, the ICC announced that Pakistan would be the primary host of the event, with another neutral venue included. Additionally, for the 2024-2027 cycle of ICC events, a hybrid model will be adopted for India-Pakistan matches. These matches will be held at a neutral venue proposed by the tournament host, which applies to several high-profile events like the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Meanwhile, Ashish Shelar, the former BCCI treasurer, has recently been elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Maharashtra, following the state’s elections. Shelar is a member of the Mahayuti alliance, which consists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Shiv Sena. His election leaves the position of BCCI treasurer vacant, which will be filled in the upcoming general meeting.

The BCCI’s internal changes, particularly with the election of a new secretary and treasurer, come at a time when the body is focused on a range of critical decisions, both domestically and internationally, under the new leadership of Jay Shah at the ICC.
