Believe It Or Not! Pak’s Multan Register’s AQI of Baffling 2,135, Lahore 760

November 10, 2024: As dense smog engulfed cities in Pakistan’s Punjab province, the air quality in Lahore and Multan reached alarming levels, with Air Quality Index (AQI) readings soaring to 760 and a shocking 1,914, respectively, according to Swiss air quality monitor IQAir. Multan, in particular, became the world’s most polluted city as it recorded an AQI of 2,135, baffling local authorities who scrambled to curb the pollution crisis.

The worsening smog has led to widespread health and safety concerns, with reports from The News highlighting that authorities have struggled to enforce anti-smog directives. Many residents neglected to wear masks, further increasing their exposure to hazardous air. In Lahore, thick smog forced road closures for the second consecutive day, with several motorway sections blocked. Tragically, low visibility contributed to a serious road accident on GT Road near Kalashah Kako, where a van collided with a parked truck, injuring at least nine people.

In response to the crisis, the Lahore High Court issued directives to close all markets and trade activities on Sundays, with operations ending by 8 PM on other days to reduce pollution. Meanwhile, the provincial government has declared a state of high alert, implementing emergency measures such as the closure of parks and museums until November 17.

The air pollution crisis in Punjab has reached unprecedented levels. The concentration of PM2.5 — fine particulate matter considered most harmful to health — was recorded at 947 micrograms per cubic meter in Multan, nearly 190 times above the World Health Organization’s recommended safe limit of five micrograms. The toxic air is a severe threat to public health, with prolonged exposure linked to respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses.

As Punjab grapples with this environmental disaster, authorities face increasing pressure to implement long-term solutions to protect public health and address the root causes of the smog that has blanketed the region.
