Bengal Govt Moves Supreme Court Over ED Raids
Mamata Banerjee-led government files caveat in IPIPack case
January 10, 2026: In a significant legal move, the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court in response to a petition by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) related to raids conducted on IPIPack offices in Kolkata. By filing the caveat, the state has sought to ensure that no order is passed without hearing its side, preventing any ex-parte decision in the matter.
The development comes amid growing political and legal tension in the state, with the Trinamool Congress government approaching the apex court after delays in hearings at the Kolkata High Court. The case has triggered sharp political reactions, with the ruling party accusing central agencies of overreach, while the ED continues its probe into the matter.
Legal experts indicate that if the ED formally moves the Supreme Court, the hearing could take place as early as Monday. The state government’s advance filing is seen as a strategic step to safeguard its interests and ensure its arguments are placed before the court at every stage of the proceedings.
