Biden Condemns New Orleans Car Ramming Incident, FBI Treats Attack as Terrorism
Washington DC [US], January 2: US President Joe Biden strongly condemned the tragic car ramming incident during New Year celebrations in New Orleans, which claimed 10 lives and injured over 30 people. The President assured full federal support and confirmed that the FBI is treating the incident as an act of terrorism.
In a statement issued by the White House, President Biden revealed that he is receiving regular updates from federal law enforcement agencies and homeland security teams, including Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall, and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
“I am grateful for the brave and swift response of local law enforcement in preventing even greater casualties. I have directed my team to ensure every resource is available as federal, state, and local law enforcement work tirelessly to determine the motive and ensure there is no ongoing threat,” Biden stated.
The President also expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, saying, “There is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate any attack on our nation’s communities.”
Biden later shared his message of solidarity and assurance on social media platform X.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday on Bourbon Street, a bustling area in New Orleans’ French Quarter, where large crowds had gathered for New Year celebrations. The city was also hosting events related to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, an annual college football event featuring the University of Georgia and Notre Dame.
According to reports from CNN, a vehicle rammed into crowds attending an open-air concert and countdown festivities. Authorities confirmed 10 fatalities and over 30 injuries from the devastating attack.
The FBI has assumed leadership of the investigation and is currently examining possible connections and motivations of the suspect involved. Law enforcement officials are exploring whether the attack was premeditated or linked to any extremist ideology.
In light of the incident, security has been heightened across New Orleans and other major US cities to prevent similar attacks. Local authorities are coordinating closely with federal agencies to ensure public safety and provide support to the victims’ families.
President Biden concluded his statement by reaffirming the government’s commitment to justice, promising that those responsible will face the full force of the law.
