Blinken Hails Israel-Hamas Ceasefire as “Historic Opportunity”

Ceasefire marks a step toward regional peace, with transitional plans for Gaza and prospects of Israel-Saudi normalization

Washington DC [US], January 17: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas a moment of “tremendous relief” for both Israelis and Palestinians, describing it as a historic chance to advance peace and stability in the Middle East.

Speaking at a press briefing, Blinken said, “This is a moment of tremendous relief for Israelis and Palestinians alike. It’s also a moment of historic possibility for the region and well beyond.” He emphasized the importance of fully implementing the ceasefire and finalizing plans for Gaza’s transitional governance, security, and reconstruction to ensure enduring peace.

Key Priorities for Sustained Peace

Blinken outlined two immediate imperatives:

  1. Ceasefire Implementation: Ensure all terms are honored by both parties.
  2. Transitional Plan for Gaza: Develop a framework for governance, security, and reconstruction to create long-term stability.

He further stated that progress on these fronts would lay the groundwork for normalizing relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, contingent on a credible path to Palestinian statehood.

Ceasefire Agreement Details

On Wednesday, the US, Qatar, and Egypt confirmed a ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas, set to take effect on January 19. The agreement includes:

  • A phased ceasefire.
  • Withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
  • Exchange of hostages, including Americans, and prisoners.

US Diplomatic Leadership

President Joe Biden announced the successful negotiation, highlighting US efforts alongside a coalition of 20 countries to counter regional threats. Biden also noted discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President-elect Donald Trump to ensure continued progress.
