June 16, 2025: Pune Train Fire– A potentially tragic train accident was narrowly averted on Monday when alert passengers rescued a man trapped inside a toilet after a fire broke out on a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train traveling from Pune to Daund, Maharashtra.
According to railway officials, the fire originated in the train’s toilet due to a suspected short circuit, quickly spreading and causing panic onboard. The victim was stuck inside the lavatory as the door jammed, rendering him unable to escape. Smoke and flames began to pour out of the compartment.
Fortunately, passengers nearby heard his desperate cries for help and noticed smoke emanating from the area. Reacting swiftly, they smashed open the toilet door and pulled the man out just in time. The incident could have turned fatal had it not been for their presence of mind.
Railway authorities quickly responded, and the fire was contained. No major injuries or casualties were reported. The affected coach was temporarily taken out of service for inspection and repairs.
Not the First Fire Incident This Year
This incident follows another recent fire reported earlier this year at Durg Railway Station in Chhattisgarh, where an empty passenger train caught fire in the yard. Although no one was injured in that incident, the blaze engulfed an AC coach, completely gutting it. The flames and smoke were visible from a significant distance.
Three fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and the fire was brought under control within 30 minutes, according to fire department officials.
Authorities on High Alert
Railways officials have initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire and have ordered checks to prevent similar incidents. Passengers have been urged to report any irregularities or electrical faults immediately to prevent such dangerous occurrences in the future.
