CAB President Snehasish Ganguly Backs Gautam Gambhir Amid India’s Struggles
Kolkata, January 22: Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Snehasish Ganguly has voiced his support for India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, advocating for more time to turn things around amid the national team’s ongoing struggles, particularly in the Test format.
Under Gambhir’s leadership, India has faced setbacks across formats, most notably in Tests. The turmoil began with a historic ODI series loss to Sri Lanka, their first in 27 years. While India managed a clean sweep against Bangladesh at home, their fortunes sharply declined with back-to-back failures.
New Zealand’s tour saw India endure a stunning whitewash in a Test series on home soil—a first in 24 years. This was followed by the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where India failed to retain the title for the first time in a decade, suffering a 3-1 series defeat to Australia.
Amid growing criticism of Gambhir’s coaching tenure and rumors of internal discord within the team, Ganguly stressed the importance of giving the coach more time to implement his vision.
“I feel happy because of his approach. As a coach, he got success for KKR after 12 years. We should give him some time. It has been only a few months since he took over after Rahul Dravid,” Ganguly told reporters.
Gambhir’s immediate focus will shift to the five-match T20I series against England, starting Wednesday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The series will serve as a testing ground for India’s preparations ahead of the Champions Trophy next month. Following the T20Is, India will face England in a three-match ODI series.
India’s fans and stakeholders will closely watch these fixtures, hoping for signs of revival under Gambhir’s guidance.
