Pakistan calls for extension of ceasefire after US-Iran talks in Islamabad end without agreement.

April 12, 2026: The collapse of negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad has prompted renewed diplomatic efforts, with Pakistan urging both sides to avoid escalation. After nearly 21 hours of intense discussions ended without a breakthrough, Pakistani officials appealed to Washington and Tehran to extend the ongoing ceasefire and continue engagement.

According to reports, Pakistan has specifically requested both countries to prolong the temporary 14-day ceasefire in a bid to maintain regional stability. While acknowledging the failure of the talks, Islamabad defended its role as a mediator, stating it succeeded in bringing both sides together and facilitating dialogue despite deep differences.

Officials noted that key disagreements—particularly over nuclear commitments and control of the Strait of Hormuz—were beyond Pakistan’s influence. With neither side willing to compromise, the talks reached a deadlock. However, Pakistan remains optimistic that diplomacy will continue, as global stakeholders push for restraint and a return to negotiations to prevent further conflict.
