Canada Election 2025: Mark Carney’s Liberals Take Early Lead as Polls Close
Ottawa, April 29, 2025 —
Polling has officially closed across Canada, and early projections show Mark Carney’s Liberal Party taking a slender lead in a fiercely contested election.
According to CBC, the Liberals have secured 23 seats and are leading in 85 others. Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party has won 11 seats and leads in 81. Meanwhile, the Bloc Québécois under Yves-François Blanchet is ahead in 16 constituencies, and Jagmeet Singh’s New Democratic Party (NDP) is leading in three.

The Liberals, now helmed by Prime Minister Mark Carney, are seeking a major political comeback, just months after trailing the Conservatives by over 20 points. Carney’s leadership, combined with a surge in patriotic sentiment triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s antagonistic remarks, appears to have narrowed the gap dramatically.

On election day, Trump reignited tensions by suggesting Canada should become the “51st state,” falsely claiming the U.S. subsidizes Canada. His comments sparked immediate backlash from both Carney and Poilievre, uniting political rivals in defending Canada’s sovereignty. “This is Canada, and we decide what happens here,” Carney asserted, while Poilievre posted, “President Trump, stay out of our election.”
The election comes amid heightened national emotion following a deadly attack at a Vancouver street fair, which briefly halted campaigning.
Nearly 29 million Canadians were eligible to vote, and a record-breaking 7.3 million cast advance ballots. A total of 343 parliamentary seats are up for grabs, with 172 needed for a majority.
Should Carney’s Liberals succeed, it would mark one of the most dramatic political reversals in Canadian history. Both major parties have pledged to prioritize renegotiations of the U.S.-Canada trade agreement to stabilize economic ties.
Final results are expected later tonight after polling stations in the western time zones finish counting.
