Tensions Rise as Trump Moves Forward with Tariffs, Citing Fentanyl Crisis and Border Security Concerns

Ottawa, February 28: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued a firm warning against impending US tariffs, vowing that Canada will retaliate swiftly if President Donald Trump imposes new trade restrictions starting March 4.

“If on Tuesday there are unjustified tariffs brought in on Canada, we will have an immediate and extremely strong response, as Canadians expect,” Trudeau said, as reported by CBC News.

The remarks come amid rising trade tensions between the two nations, with Trump accusing Canada and Mexico of failing to curb the flow of illicit drugs, particularly fentanyl, into the United States.

Trump Defends Tariffs, Blames Drug Trafficking

Trump, who has been vocal about the fentanyl crisis in the US, insists that the tariffs are necessary to pressure Canada and Mexico into tightening border security.

“Drugs are still pouring into our country from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Until it stops, or is seriously limited, the proposed tariffs scheduled to go into effect on March 4 will, indeed, go into effect as scheduled.”

Canada Pushes Back, Strengthens Border Security

Trudeau refuted Trump’s allegations, asserting that less than one percent of fentanyl entering the US comes from Canada. However, he acknowledged the need for further action, highlighting Canada’s $1.3 billion investment in border security measures, including:

✅ Drones for surveillance
✅ 10,000 personnel patrolling the borders

“Canada is not the source of problems for the United States,” Trudeau emphasized.

Trade War Looms: Retaliatory Tariffs Expected

If the US proceeds with tariffs on Canada and Mexico, the Trudeau government has signaled its intent to impose reciprocal measures starting April 2.

Meanwhile, the US had previously paused tariffs on February 4 for 30 days after Trump secured border security commitments from both Canada and Mexico. However, citing continued drug smuggling, Trump is now moving forward with trade penalties, including a 10% tariff on Chinese imports.
