Canadian Fighter Jets Intercept Civilian Plane Violating Airspace During G7 Summit

June 16, 2025: Canadian fighter jets were scrambled on Sunday, June 15, to intercept a civilian aircraft that entered restricted airspace over Kananaskis, Alberta, where the G7 summit is currently underway. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) confirmed that CF-18 Hornet jets from its Canadian region responded promptly to the airspace violation.

The incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. local time, prompting immediate action from NORAD and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The pilot of the fixed-wing aircraft was contacted using what authorities described as “final warning measures,” which included firing warning flares to gain attention.

The pilot, who remains unidentified, safely landed the plane after the intercept. The aircraft was met on the ground by RCMP officers and other security personnel. Authorities have launched an investigation into the breach, though details about the aircraft’s origin and intended destination remain undisclosed. It is also unclear at this point whether the pilot will face charges.

“This incident diverted critical resources away from their primary task of securing the summit,” said Constable Lauren Mowbray of the RCMP. “It is every pilot’s responsibility to be aware of any airspace restrictions.”

Temporary flight restrictions (NOTAMs – Notices to Airmen) have been in place over Calgary and Kananaskis since the morning of Saturday, June 14. These restrictions are scheduled to remain until noon on Tuesday, June 17, covering the duration of the high-profile summit.

The G7 meeting, hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, has brought together leaders from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada. Additionally, non-member leaders such as Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi are also in attendance.

Security remains tight in the area, with aerial and ground surveillance heightened to ensure the safety of dignitaries and participants.

Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
