Canadian Report on Nijjar’s Murder Finds “No Definitive Link” to Foreign State

Diplomatic tensions persist between Canada and India despite the report’s inconclusive findings on the Khalistani terrorist’s killing.

January 30, 2025: New Delhi:
A Canadian inquiry into alleged foreign interference, including the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, has concluded there is “no definitive link” to any foreign state. Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, was killed outside a gurdwara in Surrey, Vancouver, in June 2023. The incident ignited a diplomatic standoff after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of involvement, citing “credible information” shared with intelligence partners, including the US.

India firmly rejected the allegations, recalling its high commissioner, while Canada expelled Indian diplomats.

The findings were part of a report titled ‘Public Inquiry Into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions’, authored by commissioner Marie-Josee Hogue. The report acknowledged the use of disinformation to retaliate against perceived threats to state interests but could not conclusively establish foreign state involvement in Nijjar’s murder.

“This may have been the case with a disinformation campaign that followed the Prime Minister’s announcement regarding suspected Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, though again no definitive link to a foreign state could be proven,” the report stated.

The inquiry also highlighted disinformation allegedly spread by India regarding Nijjar’s killing but simultaneously noted Canada’s inability to provide concrete evidence supporting its claims.

Following Trudeau’s initial allegations, India’s Ministry of External Affairs dismissed the accusations as baseless, terming them “smear campaigns” that further strained bilateral relations.

The 123-page report also mentioned the expulsion of six Indian diplomats in October 2023, labeling them as “agents.” Canadian authorities claimed they uncovered a “campaign of violence” linked to the case, which India called “unacceptable targeting” of its diplomats.

Diplomatic ties between the two nations remain under significant strain, with India labeling Canada’s actions as “politically motivated.”
